Siargao, Municipality of Dapa

Port of DapaDAPA, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte – The economic growth of this town on the so-called “Paradise Island” of Siargao is cited due to its strategic location, being the jumping point to the various tourist destinations in the area.

Tourists coming from the various countries usually start in this town before proceeding to other tourist spots to experience the thrill of surfing, fishing, island-hopping, cove adventure, scuba diving, and mangrove viewing.

While in the nearby General Luna town is the site of the ongoing world surfing competition.
Siargao is tagged as the country’s surfing capital, and is composed of 48 islands and islets – politically divided into nine municipalities like General Luna, Burgos, Del Carmen, Socorro, Pilar, San Benito, San Isidro, Santa Monica, and this business center in the area.

Because of these, the local government here, supported by the national and provincial governments and the 2nd congressional district, has been enjoying various infrastructure projects.

This town is the region’s largest area in terms of mariculture production.

On the other hand, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is assisting the local government unit (LGU) here in terms of distribution of fingerlings, fish cages, nets, and other fishing materials.

And to cater to the needs of the students, the expansion of the Siargao National Science High School is also ongoing in the reclamation area, while the satellite provincial capitol building of Surigao del Norte is also being implemented here.

Local officials said that next year, a business group is mulling to construct more banking institutions to accommodate not only the growing number of tourists but also to cater to the needs of local businessmen.

Some business groups are also set to construct more hotels, grocery marts and other business structures to beef up the growing economy here.

“We are moving forward to cater to the needs of our people, neighboring towns, and to our visiting tourists,” said Municipal Mayor Peter T. Ruaya, whose vision is to make this growing town globally competitive in the coming years.
